Jurmo Cultural Path – for pilgrims and other hikers

Experience

Discover the fascinating nature and culture of the wonderfully remote island of Jurmo in the Finnish Archipelago. Part of St. Olav Waterway.
Pilgrims can stamp their passports at the chapel.

Jurmo lies beside an ancient shipping channel that connects East and West. A Danish navigation document described the island as Iurima, most southern and closest to the sea. It could have been Franciscans monks who wrote the text at the end of the 1200s, it is believed that Jurmo was already inhabited then. According to legend, there has been a church on Jurmo for at least as long.

Jurmo has been a fishing community for hundreds of years. Today the island is best known for its unique nature. It has also a long and fascinating history. This brochure will help you explore ruins, historic sites and harbours. Enjoy your ramble along Jurmo’s cultural path.
