Archipelago sailors’ life for landlubbers

Experience

Island hopping to unique small islands with a local passenger ferry.
Have you always dreamed of sailing and anchoring at romantic harbours in the balmy evening sun, the only problem is your lack of sea legs. Explore Nagu’s southern ferry route and find small, remote islands with cosy accommodation, great food, and lively harbours. All the islands mentioned have cafes or restaurants, beds or tent places and popular marinas for small, pleasure boats. Visit one or more islands on your trip, there is enough to see to spend a relaxing week “at sea”.

Departure on the free ferry from Kirjais port needs to be prebooked, do this yourself or ask the place you are staying at to do this for you. Kirjais is a 12 or 15km walk from the nearest bus stop or reachable by public transport on Fridays with a bookable service-taxi for a bus fare. The parking at the ferry pier is very limited at busy times. Bikes can be hired in Nagu village, the 17km route is very picturesque.

When to visit? The archipelago is open throughout the year and most popular to visit during the summer. Our personal favourites are:

Spring, May and June, sparkling spring is often sunny, but the waters are still cold, nature’s awakening is ever-present and the waters and skies are filled with migrating arctic birds.
Autumn, August and September the skies darken but the waters are still warm, solitary sailing boats cruise between rocky skerries, there is a slowing of pace of life but almost all services are still fully open.
More information about the islands on the map and under "turn-by-turn direction". Transport information under "getting here".
